The National Constitution Center is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Of all the museums I have visited, this one had an incredible design that guided visitors from space to space. The architectural firm of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners designed the center which opened in 2000.

The museum has three main exhibits. The first is a theater space that traces the American quest for freedom in a 17 minute production. The next exhibit highlights the Constitution in an exhibit called “The story of we the people.” It has a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation, stories of 100 Americans on touch screens, and static exhibits. The final space is a room, Signer’s Hall, of bronze statues of each of the signers of the Constitution.

There was something engaging about the space, the way you were pulled through the space that I have not experienced at other museums. I stood and watched several large school groups move through in an organized manner just through the way the building shaped the experience. Taking lessons from the museum can be applied to all public buildings.

#105architecturalinspirations is a collection of architectural details, buildings, and spaces that inspire me. I am taking on the challenge of finding two projects to spotlight each week in 2015. Hopefully I will be able to keep up and this process of discovery will push me to create better design solutions for my clients as I research and learn more about those projects I enjoy most. I challenge you to add your comments below about this project and to post your own inspirations for all to enjoy.  Full List of previous #105architecturalinspiration posts 1 – 20. First 20 architectural inspirations here21.
